Michael Gordon ~ MIT AITI on Mobiles in Africa
Great to interview MIT's Michael Gordon on MaximizingProgress.tv tonight! Michael's a doctoral student in Computer Science at MIT CSAIL who, as an extracurricular activity, runs AITI -- the African Information Technology Initiative -- a student-run effort promoting...
"...development in Africa through education in appropriate information and communication technologies (ICTs). During MIT's summer recess, AITI sends MIT students to Africa to teach African undergraduate and high school students. AITI partners with local African institutions to offer classes focused on mobile phone application development with an emphasis on independent research, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship."
Very cool! And the basis for some compelling Development Ventures! Check out the live interview here...
Very inspiring. I'm a Nigerian entrepreneur (Text2Fly, Ice Brkr) who gained a of experience living and working in the UK for 15+ years.
I'm mostly back home now and recently I've been thinking about teaching some of what I know to kids in Nigerian universities - to give something to the community. The stuff AITI and EPROM are doing is truly inspirational.
And their focus on mobile is spot on. A lot of Nigerian tech thinkers share the belief that mobile is where entrepreneurship will flourish. And parts of the establishment do too. Just the other week I had this very conversation with the chairman of one of our mobile network operators.
At a personal level, it's nice to have the AITI and EPROM programmes to look at so I can learn what worked and what didn't before embarking on my solo effort. I am very grateful for this.
Glad to see IDF is still alive and kicking!
ReplyDeleteHey Sanith! Yes, indeed. Went pretty well. Always room for improvement, of course.
