I'm still in awe of the epic green roof which landscape architect
Theodore Osmundson designed in 1958 -- a 3 acre garden on the roof of the 5-story parking garage at the Oakland, California
Kaiser Center! As
Osmundson wrote about in his Roof Gardens book, this project was championed by no less than Edgar Kaiser, the head of the firm and son of founder Henry Kaiser, the genius WWII shipbuilder. Scandalously and tragically enough, now 50 years after this amazing example, we still have not figured out how to embed these kind roof garden ideas in buildings here at MIT...
