World Cup 2014 ~ The Dutch Soccer Story...

I'm really irrationally nationalistic about only one thing -- Soccer. And then only every four years. So here's retrospective on the best team to never win the World Cup, yet again;-)
"The Dutch hold the record for playing the most World Cup finals without ever winning the tournament. They finished second in the 1974, 1978 and 2010 World Cups, losing to West Germany, Argentina and Spain respectively."
This past Cup in Brazil 2014 was no exception, despite the promising start crushing those arrogant conquistador bastard Spaniards...

Vestas Skipper Nico ~ Learning From Shipwreak...

At end November 2014, skipper Chris "Nico" Nicholson's nine-man Volvo Ocean Race team Vestas Wind ran their 65 foot racing yacht aground at 19 knots onto the charted Cargados Carajos Shoals, a reef nearish to Mauritius (which is roughly 200 nautical miles away) in the Indian Ocean. Thanks to gCaptain for sharing the saga and spotting his insights as shared with Sailing Anarchy's Alan Block... Here's some of the crash and context video... Vestas navigator Wouter comments on errors. Finally, some formal comments from CEO Frostad at Volvo Race Control...

Math In Your Feet ~ Learning #'s by Dancing!

Thanks to MIT friend Birago Jones for spotting Math in your Feet...
"An integration of two separate but highly complementary paths of inquiry. Percussive dance is a sophisticated, precise, and physical expression of time and space using foot-based dance patterns. Mathematics has been called the ‘science of patterns’ initially developed to understand, describe, and manipulate the physical world. Math in Your Feet leads students through the problem solving process of creating their own dance patterns. Along the way, they increase their understanding of mathematical topics."

First Dance ~ Haslet-Davis on MIT Leg @ TED14

Kate Torgovnick May writes on the TED blog that Boston Marathon bomb-amputee Adrianne Haslet-Davis dances on new MIT Leg...
"In 3.5 seconds, the criminals and cowards took Adrianne off the dance floor,” [MIT's Hugh Herr] says. “In 200 days, we put her back.” With that, Herr calls Haslet-Davis out for what will be her first dance since the bombing [...] on stage with her partner, professional dancer Christian Lightner. The two begin to dance a rumba, Haslet-Davis performing intricate back-and-forth footwork. [...] she twirls around her partner as the white fringe of her skirt flaps in the air. Her body looks lithe and unimpaired. Her bionic foot is encased in a white dancing slipper, just like her right foot. It’s a stunning moment. One that underscores Herr’s ultimate point. “Bionics are not only about making people stronger and faster,” he says. “Our expression, our humanity can be embedded into our electromechanics.”

Great to see Kiril Alexandrov -- good friend and MIT $100K winning alumco co-founder and Big Skinny pocketpreneur -- together with business partner Peter and their families revealing the Gorilla Gym -- a brilliant-simple doorway-retrofit exercise system -- and launching it via Indiegogo!

All the Medalists ~ NYTimes Race Infographic!

Kevin Quealy and Graham Roberts at the NYTimes put together All the Medalists historical sport infographic looking at...
"Modern Olympic results in the context of 116 years of the Games. [For example] Usain Bolt’s 9.63 set an Olympic record in the 100. So how far ahead of every Olympic medalist is he?"
Thanks to Paul @ GeekPress for spotting!
