Ghost Army ~ Art and Illusion to Fool WWII Nazis

CBS's Jim Axelrod spots World War II "Ghost Army" used decoy art to dupe the Nazis...
"The previously unknown story of an army of artists who helped America win World War Two is being told in a new documentary, showing how the artists used their talents to "put one over" on the Nazis. Eighty-eight-year old Jack Masey's army job during World War II was to blow things up. But not the way one might think. "I was in the rubber army as I called it. The inflatable army," said Jack Masey Masey's unit had a mission: to deceive the Germans into thinking Allied forces were in one location, while real U.S. troops advanced miles away. They became known as "The Ghost Army," a thousand artists, designers and audio technicians using sights and sounds to dupe the enemy."

Iconic Bottle ~ Coca-Cola's Enduring Contours...

CBS Sunday Morning spotlights the emergence of Coca-Cola as a business and most especially their iconic contour bottle design!
"Everyone, from Pop artist Andy Warhol to American football great “Mean Joe” Greene, has been mesmerized by its memorable, hourglass figure. We’re talking about the Coca-Cola Company’s legendary glass contour bottle, which debuted in 1916. The iconic vessel was the brainchild of designers at the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, Ind., who were tasked with creating a beverage container that could be easily identified by shape alone. Their inspiration for the now legendary 6.5-ounce Coke bottle: the gourd-shaped cocoa pod."

R.I.P. Neil Armstrong ~ The First Man on Moon...

Sad word just arrived and his family shares that 82 year old Neil Armstrong has passed away. He was commander of the Apollo 11 lunar mission and the first human to walk on the Moon's surface on July 20, 1969. In Armstrong's own immortal words...
"That's one small step for man,
one giant leap for mankind."
Watch the "giant leap" as it happened (thanks Andrew Revkin)...
Iconic newsman Walter Cronkite reported the landing... And here's historic retrospective on this epic human achievement...
"With computer alarms sounding and fuel running low, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their lunar module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility as millions around the world watched. Six hours later, Armstrong made his "giant leap for mankind", stepping onto the surface of the moon. He was soon joined by Buzz Aldrin, who described the scene as "magnificent desolation". They explored the surface for two and a half hours, collection samples and taking photographs. After their historic moonwalk, they successfully docked with the command module Columbia, reuniting with crewmate Michael Collins."

The Armstrong family says...
"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.”
Indeed, left behind on the Moon is the ultimate epitaph...

R.I.P. Don Cornelius ~ Soul Train Creator Suicide

Tragic to hear that Don Cornelius is gone. Creator of Soul Train, inspiration to millions of us. CBS reports...
"Soul Train" began in 1970 in Chicago on WCIU-TV as a local program and aired nationally from 1971 to 2006. It introduced television audiences to such legendary artists as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Barry White and brought the best R&B, soul and later hip-hop acts to TV and had teenagers dance to them. It was one of the first shows to showcase African-Americans prominently, although the dance group was racially mixed. Cornelius was the show's executive producer and its host from 1971-1993."
It's terribly sad that our combined love for his work couldn't translate into something supportive and meaningful to him.

Power of Charisma ~ CBS on Engaging Politicians

Interesting to see MIT colleagues Alex "Sandy" Pentland and now-alumnus Daniel Olguin of startup Sociometric Solutions on CBS show about politicians and charisma...
"...at MIT's Media Lab, researchers say that with a little device they actually can use science to measure your charisma... assuming, of course, that you have some to measure. It's called the Sociometer [...] It measures NOT what you say, but how you say it. "So the first thing is energy. You have to be energetic," said Pentland. "It shows up in your hands. It shows up in the voice, the way you sort of carry yourself and do things."
