Y'know what's cool? The reason why that illusion is so powerful: this video from the Banks' lab explains.

(Objects close to your eye are usually small. And when you're looking at them, points nearer and farther become blurry a very short distance away. So, when you doctor a photo or manipulate a camera to intentionally limit the depth of field in distant scenes... you perceive it as tiny!)
